Parking charges should be free of VAT, court declares

The Court of Appeal has ruled that ‘parking charge notices’ issued on private land are not subject to VAT.

The Court of Appeal handed down its judgment in a hearing between Vehicle Control Services Limited (VCS) and Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC). This reverses a previous decision in a case involving VCS, which saw a tax tribunal decide that VAT did apply to the charges.
