‘UK should increase air duty’

The UK should follow Germany’s lead by increasing Air Passenger Duty (APD) and using the revenue to make train travel cheaper, Friends of the Earth said this week.

The coalition government in Germany has decided to double the tax on short-haul flights and introduce a minimum fare on 1 January, as part of its drive to reduce carbon emissions. The revenue from the doubling of tax will fund a cut in VAT on rail fares from 19 per cent to seven per cent.
