According to John Bottom, director of the Boston office of consultant Steer Davies Gleave, the most important development in the US has been the launch by President Barack Obama of a strategic plan for high-speed rail earlier this year. “The plan identifies two types of projects for funding,” Bottom explains. “One would create new corridors for HSR such as those found in Europe and Japan.
