Bike Sharing – a very real form of public transport that is winning a strong public response

Tim Caswell and Henrietta Sherwin have been working on the development of a Bike-Sharing scheme in Bristol with Bristol City Council, First Great Western, and the University of the West of England. It grew out of the need for a cycle option for the onward journey from railway stations, and reflects the huge potential of such schemes in urban areas. Views in this article are the authors’ own personal opinions.

Bike sharing is the deployment of a network of bicycles, held in secure locations for planned or spontaneous public use in short distance travel – ideally, therefore, in urban environments.

A mass bike sharing service can provide the capacity for significant movement – a scheme of 100 stations and 500 bikes provides a potential 4,950 different direct journeys between them. It is more flexible than the car and faster than walking. It is open to most members of the community;...
