Many people concerned with transport and the environment, and the former's impact on the latter, have a clear 'pecking order' in their heads. Public transport (i.e. bus and rail) is always greener than the car, which is always greener than air travel. Sadly, of course, the real world is a complicated beast and simplistic assertions like the above are rarely, if ever, correct.
