Darling selects M1 as testbed for motorway HOV lanes

Transport secretary Alistair Darling has announced plans for the UK's first motorway high occupancy vehicle lane, for use by vehicles carrying two or more people.

The lane will be trialled on the the M1 between junctions 7 (St Albans) and 10 (Luton) and will operate at peak times only, southbound 7-10am and northbound 4-7pm.

It will only be implemented once the existing motorway has been widened from three lanes to four in each direction. That work is due to start in autumn 2005 and the HOV...
