The Railways Bill received its formal First Reading in the House of Commons on 5 November, paving the way for the setting up of Great British Railways (GBR), the new, publicly owned company which will oversee the management of track and train.
In a statement to MPs, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said GBR will work in partnership with devolved leaders to create a national railway that “serves local needs”.
