Car trips still below pre-Covid levels, but car ownership continues to rise

Average trips for both car drivers and passengers remain below pre-pandemic levels (by -6% and -5%), the new National Travel Survey (NTS) shows. 

Car trips made up 59% of trips and 76% of distance travelled, on average in 2024.

Average trips remained similar for both car drivers and passengers last year compared with 2023, with 357 trips per person and 189 trips per person respectively.
