Transport for Wales has commenced test running of its Class 398 tram-trains, which will replace heavy rail trains on routes north of Cardiff and later use new on-street tracks in the city as part of the South Wales Metro project.

Each unit has three carriages and will provide level boarding at stations. The tram-trains are powered by 25kV overhead wires, and by batteries in areas where overhead equipment would have been impractical or prohibitively expensive.
