Cyclists riding while drunk or using phones face prison in Japan

Cyclists caught riding while intoxicated or using a mobile phone in Japan now face prison sentences and fines. The move comes as accidents involving cyclists are on the rise, in contrast to other traffic.

Under new legislation those using a mobile phone while cycling could face up to six months in prison or a fine of up to 100,000 yen (£508) while those cycling while under the influence of alcohol could get three years in prison or a fine of up to 500,000 yen (£2,522).
