Impact of Birmingham CAZ on NO2 levels ‘modest, but significant’

Birmingham’s clean air zone (CAZ) has not reduced levels or nitrogen dioxide as much as previously reported, suggests a new study by the University of Birmingham.

The scheme, which covers an area of the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway, went live in June 2021. An interim impact assessment published by Birmingham City Council in March 2022 indicated that levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the zone had reduced by an average of 13%.
