The government has dropped a pledge to ringfence £3.5bn of England’s new National Roads Fund for local authority road schemes.
The 2018 Budget announced a £28.8bn five-year National Roads Fund (2020/21 to 2024/25), comprising £25.3bn for Highways England and £3.5bn for local authority major roads. Since last April, Vehicle Excise Duty collected in England is ringfenced for the National Roads Fund.
