The DfT has rejected nine of Network Rail’s 25 applications to close or downgrade level crossings in Cambridgeshire because of concerns the changes would discourage walking, create new road safety risks, and disadvantage the mobility impaired. 

Network Rail used a Transport and Works Act Order application to propose the closure or downgrading of the crossings. A number of the changes affected private crossings, used only by farmers to access land. Downgrading a crossing can involve...
