The DfT paid train operators £2.28bn between the 1 March and 27 June to keep trains running during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Payments were made under the emergency measure agreements (EMAs) put in place for franchises (Northern and East Coast are not EMAs, as the DfT already has full responsibility for their costs and revenues).
