Mayor’s budget for free bus travel ‘not enough’

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has not budgeted nearly enough money to deliver his free bus travel scheme for 16-18 year olds, a bus operator claimed this week. 

Burnham’s Opportunity Pass is due to be implemented on 1 September as a one-year pilot. 

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority, led by the mayor, expects the full year cost of the scheme to be £15.9m. It hopes that public and private sector organisations will help fund the scheme beyond 2019/20,...
