Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram is setting up a commission to explore the idea of a new rail station in Liverpool city centre to accommodate HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) services.
The mayor said Liverpool Lime Street would not be able to cope with the extra services that the two proposed major rail projects would bring to the city.
The commission will be chaired by Professor Denise Barrett-Baxendale MBE, the chief executive of Everton Football Club.
