The team behind the Sheffield tram-train project has been asked to see if the technology is suitable for use on the Portishead branch in North Somerset.
Re-opening of the Portishead branch is a key part of phase one of the MetroWest rail project, being led by North Somerset Council.
The project has been blighted by delays and escalating costs. The current outturn cost estimate for phase one is £116.4m, with a funding gap of £46.9m.
