Council bus company powers ‘too limited’

The Scottish Government’s proposal to give councils explicit powers to directly operate local bus services don’t go far enough, say councils. 

The Transport (Scotland) Bill will amend the Transport Act 1985 to allow councils to operate local bus services directly or via an arms-length company but only in circumstances where there is no provision by the private sector.  Council operators will not therefore be able to compete with commercially operated services.
