New funding route for councils as Major Road Network backed

The Government is to designate a major road network (MRN) of the most important local authority A roads in England and will allocate the network a portion of the new National Roads Fund created by ringfencing Vehicle Excise Duty revenues in England.  

The MRN concept was recommended in last year’s Rees Jeffreys Road Fund report, A major road network for England, authored by former RAC Foundation chairman David Quarmby and former DfT civil servant Phil Carey.
