Scottish transport minister Humza Yousaf has started working up a public sector bid for the ScotRail franchise amid criticism of performance of Abellio.
Abellio issued a robust defence of its running of the contract to the Scottish press, saying that ministers determine how many seats are available and fare levels and it would contest any public sector bid. ScotRail has introduced a performance improvement plan after missing the target for reliability and punctuality in its contract in October.
Yousaf, meanwhile, said he wanted a public sector bid ready for 2020 when a clause in the contract would allow it to be broken. He had "set the wheels in motion for developing a credible public sector bid," The Herald reported him.
