Ministers this week “deferred” plans to electrify the railways to Bristol city centre, Oxford and Bath, in a move to bring down the cost of the troubled Great Western electrification programme.

Network Rail will proceed with completing the electrification of the line between Maidenhead and Cardiff by December 2018, together with the line from Reading to Newbury. But four parts of the original project have been “deferred”:

• Didcot Parkway to Oxford
