The benefits of investing in new walking and cycling routes are highlighted in a report by Sustrans reviewing the Linking Communities programme. In 2013/14 the programme funded 45 schemes across England at a cost of £14.6m, with £6.9m provided by the DfT and £7.8m in match-funding. Aggregated data from seven schemes shows an additional 83,883 cycle trips and 32,898 walking trips on the routes in a year. A 30-year appraisal of six routes suggests a benefit:cost ratio of 7.6:1...
