Nexus is finalising an outline business case for a new fleet of vehicles to operate on the Tyne and Wear Metro.
The existing 90-strong fleet of trains was built by Metro Cammell in Birmingham for the system’s opening in 1980. Since 2010, 86 have been put through a refurbishment programme at Wabtec in Doncaster.
Nexus, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, says, however, that reliability remains a problem. It wants to introduce a new fleet in the early 2020s.
