HS2 is a threat to rail freight – not an opportunity

Chris Oldham’s interesting letter on road safety finishes with the assertion that “a major benefit of HS2 is to free up existing railways, thus helping to remove lorries of the roads” (Letters LTT 2 Oct). This is an entirely understandable assumption, but is in fact incorrect; HS2 has no tangible benefits for rail freight.
