It’s no longer about whether we should re-open railways, the question now is which railways we should revive

It has to be admitted that there is a certain category of transport person who gets a bit obsessive about railway re-openings. The ultimate aim is to put back every line that wicked Dr Beeching closed, and a few before his time as well. That usually elicits a tired response from ‘the professionals’ that it’s all too expensive and difficult and the priority must be to enhance the existing network. Maybe there’s a middle course between the two extremes.
