Oldham council staff offered tax relief to tempt them onto buses

Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council has become the latest organisation to offer employees tax relief on the purchase of annual bus tickets.

The deal is being offered under the arrangement known as 'salary sacrifice' whereby the cost of the bus passes is deducted from an employee's pay at source. The salary sacrifice payment is exempt from income tax and National Insurance contributions up to 41%. Employers also benefit from lower NIC.
