Scrap Manchester HS2 route, says Stoke

Stoke-on-Trent City Council wants ministers to scrap 70% of the new high-speed rail route between the West Midlands and Manchester, with services making use of an upgraded West Coast Main Line instead. 

Stoke says the Government should scrap the route from near Stone to Manchester, and instead connect the high-speed rail route to the West Coast Main Line near Barlaston, just south of Stoke, and then upgrade the WCML to 230km/hr capability  all the way to Manchester.
