Helmet would have saved cyclist from death, concludes judge

A Scottish judge has provoked cyclists’ anger after concluding that a cyclist’s failure to wear a helmet contributed to her death in a road accident.

Sheriff James Scott sentenced an Edinburgh motorist to undertake 300 hours of community service and banned him from driving for five years for the accident that killed the 75-year old female cyclist in the city in 2011.

According to local press reports, the judge ruled the accident was a result of “momentary inattention”...
