The Association of Train Operating Companies says that rail has increased its market share for journeys on the ten busiest domestic air routes from 29% to 46% in the six years to 2012. Train usage rose 52% to 7.7 million trips while airlines saw passenger numbers fall 26% to just over nine million. ATOC said that growth in rail use was due to the adoption of airline-style pricing by train companies and the West Coast main line upgrade cutting London to Manchester flights....
