Was First so concerned by the French threat in Cornwall that it leapt in to buy Truronian?

The news that Cornish independent bus operator Truronian looks set to join First’s UK bus empire after what appears to be a hotly contested bidding war is interesting on many levels.

The company has its origins in the former senior management team of Western National. Losing out in their bid to buy the business from the National Bus Company, they purchased Truronian, then a small coach operator, in 1987. Bolt-on acquisitions were made to create a substantial business.
