West Mids drivers take speed courses

Half of motorists caught breaking the speed limit by speed cameras in the West Midlands conurbation opted to pay £80 to attend a speed awareness course instead of paying the £60 fixed penalty notice and receiving three points on their driving licence. In all, 22,200 people attended courses in 2011/12 and 22,400 paid fines. The operating costs of the conurbation’s speed cameras are now funded from the £80 course fee.
