No amount of further research is likely to explain  why there is a huge disparity between the number of serious road accident injuries recorded by the police and the number recorded by hospital admissions,  the UK Statistics Authority has concluded.

In 2008, the DfT noted that the number of people who attend hospital with serious injuries from road accidents was up to three times the number recorded in the police’s STATS 19 accident form.
