Atkins’ stations capability is comprehensive. From concept design to detailed design, the company prides itself in offering multidisciplinary solutions which span entire project lifecycles.

This capability is, however, bolstered by a capacity to harness additional expertise which complements any traditional design work undertaken. The case studies below, for example, illustrate how Atkins has called upon its own specialists to provide the likes of interior design, geotechnical engineering and environmental services on two prominent station projects, namely Birmingham New Street and Farringdon.

“We’re very fortunate at Atkins in that we can find solutions to virtually any problem,” says Stations Design Director Demetri Anastasiou. “Stations projects have, over the years, given us the chance to offer clients an extended suite of services which has ultimately saved time and money. We’ve even proposed changes to original scopes – again to the benefit of the customer.”

By blending rail engineering with scores of other disciplines, Atkins is well positioned to be innovative and proactive. A snapshot of other examples includes heritage advice for listed buildings, transport planning and pedestrian modelling expertise for complex interchanges, and, for peace of mind, safety and reliability services.

“Our stations capability is best described as all-encompassing,” explains Demetri. “Its integrated and truly multidisciplinary, offering added value to clients in a sector which is striving to become more efficient and cost effective.”
