Recession – not the DfT – has helped bring down road accident fatalities

The 14 per cent fall in road deaths in 2008 is welcome news, but the Government must not be allowed to take the credit for it (‘Road deaths fall to new low’ LTT?3 Jul). Indeed, this reduction has come about despite the Government’s policies, not because of them.

The sudden drop in fatalities can be attributed mostly if not entirely to the recession. In 2008, motor traffic fell by 0.8 per cent, which may not sound much but it is the first time that traffic levels have actually...
