Bombardier Transportation has won a £33m order to supply 16 new Flexity 2 trams for the upgrade at Blackpool.
The trams are to be funded by the Department for Transport, Blackpool Council and Lancashire County Council, Bombardier, and are to be built at its sites in Bautzen in Germany, and Vienna in Austria.
The vehicles are scheduled to be delivered between May 2011 and March 2012.
