Tactile surfaces on footways are widely used to ‘warn’ or ‘advise’ visually impaired pedestrians of potential hazards, such as a road crossing or staircase.

However, are the mobility impaired, such as those with walking frames, wheelchairs or medical conditions that make walking over certain surfaces painful, unnecessarily suffering discomfort and inconvenience when having to cross ‘ladder’ tactile surface?
