Paul Withrington's jibe of "the fun there must be in developing policy in defiance of the facts" is an own goal (ibid). His organisation claims that rail passengers would transfer to bus if railways were converted to roads, when the real facts are that every rail closure was followed by most passengers transferring to car, and the few who transferred to bus - which were subsidised by British Rail by up to £1m pa - eventually made other arrangements and the bus services were...
