Business rate supplement to fund transport schemes

Local authorities in England will be able to levy a supplement on business rates to help pay for new transport and other projects that foster economic development under plans announced by the Government this week. One of the first applications of the proposals will be for the Crossrail project (see above).

The White Paper proposes a maximum 2p in the pound supplement, with local authorities free to determine the duration of the supplement and what projects the funds should be spent on. Capital...
