Fuel cost rises outstrip household earnings

The cost of road transport fuel has risen faster than average earnings in the last five years, according to analysis by pressure group the Drivers’ Alliance.

The Alliance’s analysis of price and earnings data from the Office of National Statistics and the DfT shows that, between 2002 and 2008, the price of petrol rose 47% and diesel 56% compared with a 22% increase in average earnings.
