The DfT has given Virgin up to 23 more months to run the West Coast Main Line. Its franchise was due to expire this month.
The extension follows the DfT’s cancellation of the competition for a new franchise due to errors in the handling of the procurement.
The DfT will seek to let a new long-term franchise before the 23 months is up and earlier if possible. The Department agreed to take the revenue risk for this period and in return Virgin accepted a 1% profit margin.
