The DfT's National Bus Strategy for England aims to make buses more frequent, more reliable, easier to understand and use, better co-ordinated and cheaper.

By the end of March 2022, all LTAs and operators must have either an Enhanced Partnership (EP) Scheme in place or be following the statutory processes to develop a bus franchising assessment.

It adds: "In lower-density, often rural areas, not served by conventional buses, the government will support new forms of provision, such as demand responsive travel in smaller vehicles."

Since July 2021, only LTAs and operators who meet these new DfT requirements are able to receive the COVID-19 Bus Services Support Grant (CBSSG), or any new sources of bus funding from the Government’s £3bn budget. These are key funding ramifications for local transport authorities (there is theoretically £300m+ per authority for those who take the necessary steps).

LTAs and operators developed Bus Service Improvement Plans  before the end of October 2021 (setting performance targets, identifying bus priority measures, outlining wider concerns such as carbon reduction, and driving improvements for passengers).

Several plans include DRT - after all - DRT has the potential to add new services enabling the network to reach more people, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. It can connect bus networks with rail services so that more people can make multi-modal journeys.
There are practical considerations to ensure that it’s cost-effective, reliable, and accessible, as well as a much greater need to communicate the how and where that services run.
This webinar will look at the practical set-up of DRT services, operational experiences of integrating DRT in the bus network, and what passengers want from DRT to ensure that retains the advantages of being part of public transport whilst reaching more communities efficiently and effectively.
