Fastned has opened an ultra-rapid charging hub near Newcastle International Airport. The hub features 12 bays delivering up to 400 kW per driver, enough to add around 100 miles of range in just five minutes.
Just a short drive from the terminal and next to Callerton Metro station, the hub will be used by airport passengers, local residents, taxi drivers and business fleets.
Extra-wide bays make parking and manoeuvring user-friendly, including for drivers using wheelchairs or mobility aids, while suspended cable systems take the heavy lifting out of ultra-rapid charging.
Dean Ward, director of commercial at Newcastle Airport, said: “The new hub is our latest investment to make charging electric vehicles faster and more reliable for everyone.
“Just a short drive from the terminal, it’s perfectly placed for passengers travelling to and from the Airport, for those dropping off or picking up friends and family and for members of the local community.
“The opening of the hub marks another major milestone on our journey to become a Net Zero Carbon Airport by 2035 and reflects the fantastic progress being made across our business to create a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
Tom Hurst, UK and Ireland country director at Fastned, said: “Our first airport location at Newcastle Airport is an exciting milestone. As people make the classic ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ journey this festive season, our new ultra-rapid charging hub forms part of our growing network across the North East, supporting hundreds of thousands of charging sessions and helping people travel sustainably across the region.
“So whether you’re heading to the airport, visiting family and friends, exploring seasonal events such as local markets, or simply going about your day, there are now faster, greener charging options available.”
With the addition of the new Newcastle hub, Fastned now operates 12 sites across the North East, offering fast, reliable charging to more drivers than ever.
The network has already supported more than 273,000 charging sessions since Fastned opened the UK’s first ultra-rapid hub at West Wear Street, Sunderland in 2019.
M&M Contractors has worked with Fastned to deliver the new charging hub in Newcastle. Michael Miller, regional director at M&M Contractors, said: “It’s been a pleasure working closely with Fastned to bring the new charging hub at Newcastle Airport to fruition. Bringing reliable, ultra-rapid charging to this key transport location will make a real difference for both local communities and visitors alike, supporting the transition to cleaner, more sustainable travel. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Fastned and building out their pipeline into 2026.”
