Transport secretary Grant Shapps has told councils to conduct opinion surveys to cut through the “noise” generated by active travel schemes, such as segregated cycle lanes and low traffic neighbourhood residential street closures.

Many councils have experienced a backlash against active travel schemes delivered with emergency funding during Covid-19. Some schemes were hastily removed as a result.
