The Local Government Association (LGA) has called for councils to be given powers to tackle overheight and overweight lorries. The LGA has compiled a catalogue of incidents where lorries have blocked streets, got stuck in villages and crashed into bridges and homes as a result of driving down routes not suitable for their size or weight, often after being taken there by a sat nav.

A spate of incidents in towns and villages has prompted the LGA to call for new powers to be granted to councils....
