The GRIDSERVE EV charging network has opene a charging Super Hub at the Moto Exeter motorway service area.

Following the completion of a major expansion, the Exeter Super Hub now features 48 ultra-rapid charging bays, comprising 44 bays for passenger electric vehicles and four dedicated electric Heavy Goods Vehicles (eHGV) charging lanes.

Located at J30 of the M5, the site serves one of the UK’s busiest motorway corridors. It has been upgraded to meet increasing demand and minimise waiting times while continuing to provide reliable, super-fast charging at scale.

“The Moto Exeter Super Hub is a major milestone in GRIDSERVE’s mission to deliver the fastest, most reliable and most convenient EV charging experience in the UK,” said Daniel Kunkel, chief executive of GRIDSERVE. “What started as a legacy site of the Electric Highway has evolved to become the largest, ultra-rapid EV charging station in the country.

“We’re showing what’s possible when long-term infrastructure planning, grid investment and cutting-edge technology from ABB E-mobility comes together to support the shift to electric transport for everyone. And as EV adoption continues to accelerate, GRIDSERVE remains committed to building the infrastructure required to support cleaner transport.”

Moto Hospitality’s chief executive, Ken McMeikan, added: “The expansion of our Super Hub at Exeter marks a major milestone in our mission to revolutionise EV charging on the UK’s motorway network. Now the UK’s largest EV charging hub, with increased capacity and High Power charging bays, this new facility will provide a significant boost for EV drivers travelling on the M5.

“It demonstrates our continued commitment to enhancing the EV charging experience through greater reliability, simplicity, speed and accessibility at key locations across our network.”

The transformation of Moto Exeter began following GRIDSERVE’s acquisition of the Electric Highway from Ecotricity in 2021, laying the foundations for what was a new generation of super-fast EV charging locations.

Over the last four years, Moto Exeter has been comprehensively redeveloped through upgraded grid connections and a series of expansions, from 12 ultra-rapid EV charging bays in 2022 to 48 bays in 2026, helping keep pace with growing EV adoption.

The Super Hub features systems produced by chargepoint manufacturer ABB E-Mobility. At Moto Exeter, GRIDSERVE has installed ABB’s latest A400 charger, which is capable of delivering up to 400kW of power,

“The site’s early deployment of ABB T124 chargers played a pivotal role in supporting the first wave of EV drivers,” explained Oliver Johnson, country lead of ABB E-Mobility. “Now, with GRIDSERVE launching its first ‘Super Hub’ concept at Exeter, we can see just how far EV technology has progressed with the introduction of the A400 charger. Delivering significantly faster charging speeds and intelligent dynamic power sharing – distributing available power across multiple vehicles to maximize efficiency during busy periods – the A400 sets a new benchmark for what a best?in?class charging experience should be.”
