A vehicle’s speed does play a part in traffic accidents

I would like to comment on the views of Messrs Heymer and Withrington (Letters LTT 13 Nov).

Mr Heymer appears to be confused about road safety. There are three basic steps in a collision. Firstly, someone makes a mistake, or a miscalculation, due to poor road engineering, overconfidence or inattention. People end up too close together, and moving in the wrong directions.

Secondly, the brain takes about a second to realise that it is in serious trouble.

Thirdly, the brake pedal is pressed hard...
