The Government’s high-speed rail plans continue to attract a mix of praise and criticism.

Last week’s announcement of the northern route extensions was praised by the CBI and the TUC. Network Rail was also supportive. David Higgins, its chief executive, said: “HS2 can transform long-distance travel, improve daily commutes on existing lines and create space on the network for passengers and freight to transfer from congested roads to an expanded railway.”
