Why can’t the coach be more like a train?

In transport terms, the rail network was the pioneer of fast, efficient long-distance and commuter travel. It replaced the horse drawn stagecoach links between towns and cities, and allowed the growth of suburbs served by commuter trains.  Motor buses - and coaches - came late, and though the bus has long been seen as a logical companion to rail transport in urban areas, and a feeder to it regionally, its sister, the coach, is usually regarded as a poor relation to the train.
