A tunnel could be built in the Cotswolds Area on the Outstanding Natural Beauty near Gloucester to eliminate a bottleneck on the A417.
The Swindon to Gloucester trunk road has a three-mile ‘missing link’ section of single carriageway in the vicinity of Air Balloon roundabout, which includes a section of steeply graded road.
Encouraged by the recent construction of the Hindhead Tunnel on the A3 in Surrey, the DfT believes a tunnel could be built on the A417.
