Essex Thameside franchise could be testbed for new fares and devolution

The new 15-year Essex Thameside franchise, covering the line from Southend to London Fenchurch Street, could become a testbed for new types of rail fares, under proposals set out by the Department for Transport.

In its consultation on the new franchise, the government has suggested that operators should consider new types of smart ticketing as a means of providing more flexible fares and tickets to meet the needs of markets poorly served by existing rail industry pricing. Off-peak customers...
